POSSIBLE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN!

Local 2455 Members,

As many of you might have heard in the media, there is a very good chance that our country will experience a federal government shutdown when government funds run out on October 1, 2023.

The government shutdown is due to Congress failing to enact appropriation bills that fund the federal government before the start of the 2024 fiscal year.  Currently, it appears that there is no agreement in sight between democrats and republicans that would prevent a partial or full shutdown.

Federal employees do not get paid during a government shutdown, so we encourage you to plan accordingly.  However, thanks to a 2019 law, federal employees will receive retroactive backpay after the government is funded.  Please keep in mind that the last government shutdown in 2019 lasted 35 days, the longest in US history.

We will continue to provide you with regular updates as more information becomes available.

Stay safe,

Hector Garza
